*Note: this pic was not taken from yesterday’s concert. I was way too far away to get a good pic!
These past few weeks have been a bit difficult for me with trying to continue to be patient with myself in the job search. I find myself getting easily disappointed with all those little things – dwelling on all my responses after an interview. So needless to say, the KT Tunstall concert I went to last night was definitely something I needed. She performed at a small venue here in NYC called the Fillmore at Irving Plaza where there was standing room only. Doors opened at 8pm, but the opening act didn’t come on until 9 and were on for about 15-20 minutes. I usually think opening acts are pretty bad but this one was sorta ‘Jack Johnson’y as my friend told me (I went with one of my gal pals) and weren’t that bad. It seemed like KT was running late because we were all getting antsy and wondering when she’d start. She came on at 10pm and apologized for being late. It seemed like she had just arrived from somewhere else.
I’ve never seen KT in person before, so when she came out on stage my petite 5’2” self had to jump around a little bit to get a good look. I don’t think the pics or video clips I’ve seen of her do justice to the fact that she is a pretty lady. I could see more of her ¼ Chinese features, that don’t seem to be as distinct in photos
. Anyway, so overall I did expect her to be good, but I think she surprised me with being a notch better than I expected
. She sang a lot of songs from her first album and a few from her second. I think this may be the first time I was at a concert where I knew the lyrics to almost all the songs! I was surprised when looking around in the crowd that a lot of people weren’t singing along. I saw a few women mouthing the words, but not many. That was okay though, because I think overall everyone was having a great time and I saw a lot of head nodding, and smiles. The second song she sang actually made me tear, and is probably my second most favorite song on the first album, ‘Other Side of the World.’ After she performed that my friend told me she liked the song. I think what really impressed me overall with her performance was how she didn’t just run through the songs, like many artists these days seem to do. KT sang the song like she was telling a story, putting emphasis on certain words/phrases, and slowing down where appropriate to make a point. Also, her band was great, with multi-talented musicians. One which played the guitar, bass and cello! I also really enjoyed getting a glimpse into her quirky personality, whenever she talked in between songs. She’d say things that led into or were related to the next song she was going to sing, very dark-humor type of jokes. I really liked seeing this part of her and it made me smile, like the way I am while I’m writing this
.
She did sing my favorite song on the first album which is ‘Miniature Disasters’ and everyone seemed to really enjoy hearing that one. She and her band left the stage at about 11pm, and came back for an encore performance and sang I believe 2 additional songs (wasn’t sure if she sang a third). Everyone knew she was going to sing ‘Suddenly I See’ because she didn’t sing it earlier.
Basically, as a recap it was an amazing show and what really just made it for me throughout was the fact that she as well as her band genuinely seemed to be so happy to be there and be able to do this. In one of her sound bites she said something like, “You know how little children like running around and being able to play and do whatever they want, well that’s us. We’re playing up here!” Something to that degree, I don’t remember word for word. This made me think of a segment on her on the CBS Sunday Morning show this past Sunday. She said that when she first started to get into the music thing they were telling her she was too old to do this at the age the was at the time, 27. The reporter was with her at a concert in Scotland which was on her birthday. She said someone told her, "Why are you working on your birthday?" And she replied, ‘This isn’t work!’ So after remembering that and seeing her on stage, it made me realize that she’s so happy in her success right now and just seems so thankful. I felt very inspired. Anyway, so if KT comes to a city new you, she is so worth checking out, even if you don’t really know her stuff. To me she’s the type of artist you fall in love with after seeing live. And I’m definitely loving her more

Great review! I love the song Miniature disasters too, I will have to see if she is in the SF area anytime soon. I saw her on TV once, did she play a lot of instruments or just the guitar?
1Thanks Team
She just played the guitar (changed it up a couple of times, played
eletric and acoustic), but I believe she may have used a bazooka on one of the songs.
2Awesome review. I am listening to her new cd as I write this. She seems like such a genuine musician. I love it. Also do you know what the name of the band was that opened up for her?
3Is the new album any good?
Was she using foot recorder thingy?
4Yes
!!!! I think she did use the foot recorder thing, b/c for a second I thought I
heard her echo and wondered how that happened! lol After seeing her yesterday I think there are a few songs I like in the new album, but unlike the first album (where I love all the songs), I
don't think it's as strong and not as many I'll love. You'll definitely need to give the songs on the second album a few listens before getting into it.
5Awesome, I actually bought that last album on itunes and it came with a performance of her on the today! It was fantastic to see this one woman create the music all by herself. I can't find the performance on youtune of course!
I will give the new album a couple listens! Thanks
6its really nice..
7loveny21 the opening band was called Tamarama.
