A girl I'm really loving right now, as many of you know already from my previous post, (thanks to loveny21) is an indie artist, Ingrid Michaelson. She posted the below in her own blog on myspace.com. And I was wondering what my sugar girls thought. What really is the difference between 'selling out' and just 'succeeding', in the music industry? Tawk amongst yaself

To Sell Out or Not To Sell Out...that is the question...

greetings,
well well well...a lot has been happening over the past few weeks what with "The Way I Am" on an Old Navy commercial and all. i have to tell you guys that it is incredible the amount of exposure that commercial has given me! and it has afforded me many opportunities that i would have never had before! i am very grateful and so happy. and because i am still going at this with out a label, which is fun but scary, i am able to fund my career as a record label would...at least for now!
my question to you all is, when do you call it "selling out" and when do you call it "succeeding"? i have gotten a few emails and comments saying that now that my songs are on TV and mainstream radio programs, that i have become "a sellout". i suppose i should have stayed in my basement playing concerts for my dolls all my life.... i have seen this before. it makes me a bit upset because it seems that some people love knowing about an indie artist, but as soon as they garner some attention, these people get mad! but you have to understand that this is how we make a living!
i would like to open this up as a forum for you all. i want to hear both sides. my feelings will not be hurt, but i am interested to hear more.
so let's have it.

I agree. People are never happy. She is not a sellout it is her job. Everyone wants 'to make it'. I think she would be called a sellout if she changed who she is, just to make it... For example: started wearing skanky clothes or whatever would be the complete opposite of her. IMO of course. I have never heard of her, but I wish her luck.
1I don't think this is as much of an issue as it used to be. I also feel that it was more in the minds of the fans, then the artists.
2It seems everyone is lending their music to commercials and other things which people associate with "selling out".
Bob Dylan sold his song The Times Are a Changing" to a bank commercial, and the fans went crazy. But its not like he ever promised he wouldn't, or that it was some kind of ultimate sin for a songwriter or band.
Not to mention he topped that by appearing in a Victoria Secret ad with one of his songs. I think that just shows he has a sense of humour.
Good points there Jinx and kiwi.
3I also agree w/ Kiwi and Jinx.
